A new stage of the Halyk Ormany project has launched in the Ile-Alatau National Park

A new stage of the environmental project Halyk Ormany (People’s Forest) has begun in Ile-Alatau National Park. The initiative was launched by the Halyk Charitable Fund of Timur Kulibayev, together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In a place where there was only dry grass not long ago, the first rows of young fir trees now stand – a symbol of new life and care for the country’s future.

A forest that begins with an idea

According to the Halyk Charitable Fund, the project aims to restore natural ecosystems and create new green zones across the regions of Kazakhstan.

One billion tenge has been allocated for implementation over five years. During this period, more than four million trees are expected to be planted in three regions of the country: Abai Region, Ile-Alatau National Park and the green belt of the capital.

The first phase has already taken place in the Semey Ormany reserve, where 800,000 young pines were replanted after devastating fires. The next phase is Ile-Alatau, where 14,000 fir trees will be planted across five hectares.

Ecology is not a campaign – it’s a culture

Nurbek Sharbiyev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, emphasized that environmental protection must become a way of thinking rather than a one-time effort.

‘Until we learn to treat the environment with care, economic growth cannot be sustainable. Halyk Ormany is a step toward making environmental responsibility a natural part of our lives,’ the Vice Minister stressed.

In turn, Dauren Sartayev, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Halyk Charitable Fund, highlighted the long-term value of the project.

‘Every tree planted is an investment in a city’s breath – in the habit of caring, not just consuming. Halyk Ormany nurtures responsibility and love for nature. It’s something that will remain after us,’ said Dauren Sartayev.

From an initiative to a movement

The Fund recalled that earlier this spring, Halyk launched the GreenAct environmental challenge, which united participants nationwide. Thousands of schoolchildren, volunteers and employees of various companies joined efforts to clean parks, sort waste and plant greenery. Now the Fund continues this environmental mission by implementing Halyk Ormany as a long-term program for restoring and expanding Kazakhstan’s green zones.

Kazakhstan is a country of vast open spaces, where greenery often gives way to steppe and industrial areas. That’s why every new forest is more than just a landscape – it’s a contribution to sustainable development.

Statement from Halyk Charitable Fund

The Fund believes that the Halyk Ormany project is about forming a habit of caring, about awareness and about responsibility toward future generations.
